You would be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t own at least one pair of jeans, in fact it’s estimated that on average a consumer owns seven pair. The once practical choice of work wear has become a staple in the wardrobes of many men and women. Still a popular choice of casual wear, women’s jeans have become a force to be reckoned with among manufacturers and designers. The versatile pant is worn not only for everyday but also dressed up for a girl’s night out or dinner. Styles range from boot cut, straight leg, bellbottom and low rise jeans.
Low rise jeans emerged as hip huggers in the sixties but regained popularity in the late nineties and continue to be a favorite amongst women and teens. Also given the name hip huggers, the jeans are labeled based on the fact that the waist hangs a few inches from the belly button and even lower in the ultra low rise variety. Typically showing a lot more skin in the hip and waist, they are usually worn with a shorter, crop top but can be worn strictly on the basis that they are more comfortable for some people.
Generally low rise jeans should not be worn by heavyset people as this forms an unflattering billowing at the top of the waist. The cut of the leg needs to be considered when fitting your pair. Boot cut and straight leg jeans are great if you have a shorter leg as they elongate the look of your body. Tapered styles work better on tall and/or thin physiques. Make sure to be careful of placement of any embellishments on the pant. Embroidery or rhinestones positioned in problem areas can just accentuate the issue. Low rise jeans are typically tight but available in baggy styles as well.
Low rise jeans can be bought at almost any store that sells women’s jeans. If your budget is tight, you can pick up a pair at any JCPenny or Walmart. Signature by Levi Strauss & Co. has a women’s low rise boot cut jean that can be found at Walmart for less than $20.00. That price can’t be beat! They also carry Jordache and Faded Glory for about the same price. JC Penny’s in store brands includes Lee jeans and Levi’s as well but at a bit higher price.
If designer jeans fit your fancy, the iconic Guess jean is a good pant and moderately priced depending on the style. Their website has a store locator and helpful denim guide for assistance in choosing the right fit. Look for the words “short inseam” as this is an indicator of the low rise style. Regular priced Guess women’s jeans will run you $90 to $150 but online promotions can save you about 30-40%. Other ultra trendy designer low rise jean brands are Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle and Deisel.
The best way to find your perfect pair of low rise jeans is to visit the various stores and try them on. If the prices seem outrageous then gather names, styles and sizes of all the different jeans that fit you great and then look around online for the best deals. Choose a style you identify with and that is the best fit for your body type. Bring a friend to help you decide because it’s good to have a second opinion.
